A: Call the creditor, ask to speak to a manager. BE NICE. The minimum wage 20 year old who answers the phone is not responsible for the issue and probably nothing on his or her information screen would tell him or her why your account is in collection. Calmly explain that to the best of your knowledge, your payments are up to date but that you received a call from collections (internal to the company or a 3rd party collection agency? If I was the manager I'd want to know that). You could be wrong about your payment history. Make certain all your payments were cleared by your bank - its possible that a payment check was sent to a different account OR in many cases, there is an account that money is deposited into when the account number on the check is wrong, missing, illegible. etc. Work with them to solve the problem.
