Indianapolis, IN asked in Traffic Tickets for Indiana

Q: I need help understanding IC code: IC 9-21-8-1, for disregarding traffic officer.

I was trying to enter the highway based on google maps. I saw two police cars parked in one lane of the lanes of the highway, so I slowed down completely to go around the car, like you normally would on the highway when a lane is blocked. There were no stop signs of traffic cones to block the lanes. So I assumed it was okay to pass slowly, until on of the police officers honked and misconstrued my actions as disregarding the traffic officer. At the time, I was the only car, but later other cars also started driving towards the highway lane, indicating that it wasn't clear to everyone if both lanes were blocked. If I did, I never would have entered the lane. I did not mean to disobey the officer. I've never had a criminal record or got a citation for disobeying traffic rules. I understand that I am still at fault here and I am willing to pay the penalty. But I don't want to have a bad driving record. I would like to know what my options would be here.

A: You should consider speaking with a local criminal/traffic attorney who will be able to best argue your position. If you simply pay the ticket it will add a minimum of 4 points to your record and could raise your insurance rates.
