Alpharetta, GA asked in Child Support and Family Law for Georgia

Q: What are my options here regarding child support?

My ex-girlfriend moved back in with her father a few weeks ago and took both our children with her. I have been taking care of her and our children for the past 10 months. She has been threatening to take me to court if I don't agree to pay her $600 in child support. I am currently not employed with a company, but rather do general labor and handyman work throughout the week. My income varies week to week, and most months I make just enough to cover our living expenses. My ex-girlfriend receives government assistance ranging from Medicaid which covers all of her and our children's medical expenses, food stamps, and WIC. She has no living expenses as her father pays for everything and she hasn't attempted to find work in over 3 years. I am curious to find out what she could be entitled to. I barely have any savings, and the only asset I have is my vehicle. The apartment is also in my name. I've been trying to reason with her on a different payment. What should I do? Thanks.

A: If she no longer lives with you, you will have to pay something more than nothing. For now, give her at least $300, but you will need to adjust your budget because support will be owed. There is no way for anyone to tell you how much, because it is a mathematical formula that takes into account a variety of numbers.

A: Child support is determined on a variety of factors. You will need to look into an adjustment if your financial situation has changed. If there's an order for the $600 you will be held liable for that until there is a change.
