Slidell, LA asked in Family Law and Adoption for Louisiana

Q: How do I go about having my parents formally adopt me?

I live in Louisiana but my parents live in Alabama. I'm 22. I am an orphan; my mom died in 2011, my dad in 2016. My stepmom took care of me until I turned 18 and a few months thereafter; then, I moved in with the people I now call my parents. They are extended family, but I've asked them to adopt me. Alabama only allows adult adoptions if the adult is completely and permanently disabled (physically or intellectually). Louisiana doesn't (from my understanding). I know I can't get specific legal advice for free, but where can I get detailed and accurate information on a situation like this? How do I do this with as few roadblocks as possible?

EDIT: I was born in California - probably should have mentioned this in the beginning.
