Detroit, MI asked in Traffic Tickets for Minnesota

Q: Received a driving without a current mn license because my sd license expired. Mn dmv was closed for covid and couldn't

Dmv was closed for covid so i couldn't switch my license when I moved. Ticket didn't have a court date just a number that was a recording on how to pay fines and was not a number to speak with a clerk. Email district attorney office asking for my court date and got a response asking for citation # and nothing on court date . A month goes by and showed my ID to a cop who then tried to arrest me for missing this court date i never got. Posted bail 500 cash on the spot and released and had to call the sheriff's office and it took him 3 hours to find my zoom date for this. Now I have trial to show covid law that i was allowed to drive because dmv was closed for this. Where my rights violated on this?? Left multiple emails on asking how and what is my court date yet a had a warrant for missing what date or anything

A: Let’s address a couple of things here. First, COVID did not authorize you to drive without a valid license. You might be in a different situation if you had a valid SD license and you were charged with not switching you license over. The fact that the DMV was closed might be something you could work with here. But your SD license was expired so you didn’t have a valid license of any kind.

Your rights were not violated on the court date issue either. The citation provides information on a number to call where you are provided information on either paying the citation or requesting a court date. Court date information is typically mailed to you and it is your obligation to make sure that you provide them with a current court date.
