A: Dear Mrs. or Mr,

this is a very frequent question when people start business and there can be more than one good answer to this.

At first there is no such thing as global trademark so far.

Most cost effective way to obtain trademark protection in multiple countries with single trademark application is to use madrid trademark system offered by World Intellectual Property Organization. This system offers you to designate the countries you would like to file your trademark application in and pay less on government fees. Bear in mind that you need basic trademark application first to create international application.

Another way to obtain trademark protection in multiple countries is to file application in each country you are seeking protection in, but separately. This is more complicated and more costly.

Final price when using madrid system would depend on number of countries designated and legal fees of the attorney. Fee calculator for filing through madrid system can be found here: https://madrid.wipo.int/feecalcapp/

According to my practice the most fast way is to file European Union Trademark (as your basic trademark) and together with it you can file international trademark.

I very highly recommend to use trademark attorney in this matter to make a clearance search first and then recommend you the most effective way to protect your brand.
