Chicago, IL asked in Traffic Tickets for Illinois

Q: I got a speeding ticket. I was going 58 in a 35mph zone. What will my options be?

There has been no court date set. I got the ticket today(10/08/2023). This happened in Lincolnwood, IL. The court is in the 2nd Municipal District of the circuit court of cook county, Illinois. I have a pretty clean record. Zero speeding tickets

A: Even though you were ticketed for going 23 MPH over the posted limit, this is still considered a petty offense, which is punishable by fines only. If you have a clean driving record, you will likely be eligible for court supervision, which would not put any points on your driving record and usually doesn't affect your insurance (if you have a CDL, however, even a petty speeding ticket can affect your CDL, and you should seek the assistance of a traffic attorney).

On the bottom of your ticket, it should indicate whether or not a court appearance is required. Even if it is marked "No Court Appearance Required," you can ONLY receive court supervision if you got to your court date and talk to the prosecutors. If you mail in the ticket or pay it online, it will show up as a conviction for petty speeding on your driving record. If you show up for court, you can ask the prosecutor for court supervision. The amount you actually pay by going to court WILL be higher (as you are assessed "court fees" for availing yourself of the court process), but for many people, the tradeoff of protecting your driving record is worth the added cost and hassle of going to court. And some courts still have Zoom options for attending - you can check the Cook County Circuit Clerk's website to see if there is a Zoom option available for your case.
