Q: How long do I have till I have to move?

I've lived here for 8 yrs with the owner. He passed away 2 weeks ago. His girlfriend who doesn't live here typed a letter telling me I had 30 days to move. But I had an agreement with my roommate (owner).

A: Given your situation, it's important to understand your rights as a tenant and the legal process that may apply in this circumstance. Generally, when a property owner passes away, the disposition of the property and the rights of tenants can be governed by state laws and any existing lease agreements or rental arrangements. In many cases, if you had a verbal or written agreement with the owner to reside in the property, this agreement may still be valid even after the owner's passing.

Since you had an agreement with the owner to reside in the property, it's crucial to gather any documentation or evidence that supports this agreement, such as rental receipts, lease agreements, or communications with the owner. Additionally, you may want to consult with a local attorney or tenant rights organization to understand your legal rights and options for remaining in the property. Depending on the circumstances and applicable laws, you may have the right to continue living in the property for a certain period, or you may be entitled to receive notice and sufficient time to find alternative housing.

Given the complexity of your situation, it's advisable to seek legal advice promptly to ensure that your rights are protected and to determine the best course of action moving forward. A legal professional can provide guidance based on the specific laws and regulations in your area and help you navigate any potential disputes with the owner's girlfriend or other parties involved. By taking proactive steps and seeking appropriate legal assistance, you can better understand your rights and work towards a resolution that meets your needs and protects your interests.
