Scottsdale, AZ asked in Libel & Slander for New Mexico

Q: Do I have a defamation case if it's thru social media

I was slandered on social media before charges were ever filed against me. Due to this I lost my job, lost my vehicle in the impound yard , was Incarcerated & humiliated because of everything that was falsely said about me. I can't get a good job because of it & I ended up beating the case against me. The social media group should have made things right by posting an update to prove i was wrongfully accused & they neglected to do so

A: A New Mexico attorney could advise best, but your question remains open for a week. I'm sorry for your ordeal. To answer your question meaningfully, it could be helpful to arrange a consult with an attorney. From a TEXTBOOK standpoint, if the things written about you were false, you suffered damages, and there was the requisite mental state on the part of the wrongdoer, then it's possible you have grounds for a libel case. From a PRACTICAL standpoint, an attorney could help you determine if the matter is cost-effective and realistic to pursue. Good luck
