Q: I want to join a religious organization as a monk but I’m scared that my family will sue them for “brainwashing”
I am a 18 year old in Georgia and As a monk I must cut all ties with family, not touch money and not even look at them and live a very simple life using 2 sets of loin cloth without a penny in my bank account
A:
Joining a religious organization as a monk is a deeply personal decision, and it's natural to feel concerned about potential legal challenges from your family. While it’s unlikely that your family could successfully sue for "brainwashing," it’s important to understand that they might still attempt legal action if they feel you are being unduly influenced or coerced. The organization’s practices, as well as your decision to cut all ties and live without personal possessions, could be misunderstood by those who care about you.
To protect yourself and the organization, consider clearly communicating your intentions and the reasons behind your choice to your family. This can help them understand that your decision is voluntary and informed. If you feel it’s safe, a letter or conversation expressing your personal convictions and the benefits you see in this path might ease their worries.
It could also be helpful to have a conversation with someone in the organization about your concerns. They might offer guidance on how to manage family relationships during your transition. If you choose to move forward, being well-prepared and having thought through your actions will help ensure a smoother process for everyone involved.
