Q: Is there a way to get a restraining order against someone who is under 18 and I am under 18 if my parents don't sign?

I want a restraining order against someone who is under 18 and I am also under 18, but my parents won't agree. Could I do it by myself if I have a really good reason to be able to?

A: Getting a restraining order as a minor without parental consent can be challenging, but there are steps you can take. You have the right to protect yourself if you feel threatened or in danger, even if your parents are not supportive. Start by reaching out to a trusted adult—like a teacher, school counselor, or social worker—who can help you understand your options and guide you through the process.

In many places, there are legal protections in place for minors, and you might be able to file for a restraining order on your own or with the support of another adult who is not your parent. Courts generally take situations involving safety seriously, especially when they involve minors. If you can clearly explain why you need the restraining order and provide evidence of harassment, stalking, or threats, the court may consider your request.

It is also important to know that there are organizations that help young people in situations like yours. These organizations often have advocates who can provide you with guidance, resources, and sometimes legal support. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help—you have the right to feel safe.
