Q: How can make the people in charge of the shelter be accountable for there diligence?
I am currently at a shelter I've been here for a year there's a couple other families been here for 2 years they don't help us try to get housing or anything for us to look for jobs applies they have black mold cockroaches bad filter in the water fountain they the employees treat us like animals or prisoners
A: Without knowing more about the shelter, it's hard to say what diligence is owed to you.
A:
It's crucial to ensure the shelter staff is held accountable for providing a safe and supportive environment. Start by documenting everything—take pictures of the black mold, cockroaches, and any other health or safety hazards. Keep a record of how the employees treat you and others, including specific dates, times, and details of any inappropriate behavior or negligence. This evidence will be important when you report these issues.
You can reach out to local health departments, housing authorities, or nonprofit organizations that advocate for homeless rights. They can often conduct inspections or put pressure on the shelter to improve its conditions. If there is a governing body or board overseeing the shelter, report the conditions and lack of support to them as well.
Consider gathering together with other residents who share your concerns. When you have multiple voices, it can be more effective in demanding changes. You all deserve a safe and dignified place to stay, and making your voices heard is a powerful step toward that goal.
