A: In this situation, if the phone and plan were never in your name and you were a minor at the time, you may not be legally obligated to repay the $1,100. Generally, contracts signed with minors aren’t enforceable because minors can't legally consent to binding agreements. This means any agreement related to that phone plan would have been your family's responsibility, not yours.

Now that you’re 18, they can’t retroactively hold you accountable for a contract you couldn’t legally enter. However, if you agreed to repay them in any informal way, such as a family agreement, that would be more of a personal matter rather than a legal one.

It’s important to have a conversation with your family about the situation and explain your understanding. If they feel strongly about repayment, you could negotiate a way forward that works for both of you.
