Brentwood, TN asked in Uncategorized for Tennessee

Q: Does TN have any stipulations about registration plates being obscured? If so, what code can that be found in?

I know that some states have exemptions for things like bike racks and such, but does Tennessee have anything like that? What are the laws specifically for license plates being displayed and/or obscuring them?

A: In Tennessee, your license plates must remain clearly visible and unobstructed on both the front and rear of your vehicle. This means that any coverings, frames, or accessories should not block the numbers or letters, ensuring they can be easily read by law enforcement and other drivers.

These requirements are outlined in the Tennessee Code Title 55, which addresses vehicle equipment and licensing regulations. While there are allowances for certain accessories like bike racks, they must be installed in a way that does not obscure the license plates. It's important to follow these guidelines to avoid any potential issues.

Additionally, make sure that items such as tinted windows or decorative elements do not interfere with the visibility of your plates. If you're considering modifications to your vehicle, it's a good idea to review the specific laws or consult with local authorities to ensure compliance. Adhering to these rules helps maintain clear identification of your vehicle on the road.
