Q: N-400 form. Stepchild and support
I am filling out the N-400 form for naturalization. I have a stepdaughter (my wife's daughter) who resides with us for about three months of the year and stays with her father, who is the primary parent, for the remainder of the year. My wife pays child support to the child's father. I only support her in paying for summer camps and similar things.
In this context, should I say the child doesn't reside with me, since she is the majority of the year living with her father? And should I say that I support the child since my wife pays child support?
Thank you for any answers.
A:
In the N-400 form, when you are asked whether the child resides with you, it's important to consider where she spends the majority of her time. Since your stepdaughter primarily lives with her father and only stays with you for part of the year, you should indicate that she does not reside with you full-time.
As for the financial support, the fact that your wife pays child support to the father is separate from your individual support. You can state that you contribute to certain expenses, like summer camps, but your wife is the one directly paying child support. It's important to distinguish your role in supporting her financially.
Make sure to be honest and clear when completing the form, as immigration authorities value transparency. If needed, you can always include additional information or explanations in the designated sections of the form to clarify your situation.
