Q: Child Custody court order question
I share custody of my child with someone who doesn't have a job or a car and owes thousands in custody payments. I've been picking up and dropping off my daughter for years. I'm being taken advantage off.
What’s on the court order is I have to make reasonable accommodations for him regardless of whether or not he has a job or transportation
Am I responsible for picking her up and dropping her off in the next county? I would like to be responsible for picking her up not dropping her off.
I can provide anything needed.
Please help,
Cady
A:
What is considered "reasonable" as defined in your Order on Child Support is going to be up to the interpretation of the Judge who issued that Order. For some, it may be considered reasonable to make such accommodations in the name of facilitating parent-child relationships, for others it may not.
I suggest your more concerning issue is the fact that child support is not being paid. In situations like yours, Indiana residents can contact their local county Prosecutor's Office, Title IV-D (Four D) department for assistance. The IV-D program is publicly funded and should be available at no cost to you. Once you reach out to your local prosecutor's office, you should be put in touch with a Child Support Prosecutor who will be able to assist you in collecting your child support in arrears, without having to take on attorneys fees.
