Bristol, VT asked in Employment Law for Vermont

Q: I was given a severance package upon termination that has the gag clause, is that legal?

I have worked here for more than 33 years. They said that due to findings of a review of my work they needed to terminate me, they refused to show me what the audit found. I believe they are just needing me gone due to other expenses that the agency recently acquired On June 13, 2024 I had a perfect review, everything was spectacular. They have in their policy that if you are fired/terminated you do not get you accrued CTO. I have over 300 hours. My severance package is basically my CTO payout, nothing extra for all the years I have worked. I feel the gag clause is basically telling me that I cannot tell my fellow employees why I was terminated. No one that I work with would believe that I did something bad enough to be terminated. They accused me of trying to sabotage the agency. It has been a week and they still have not told my coworkers that I am not coming back. They think that I am still on Medical Leave as that is what I was on when they put me on Paid Adm leave
