Q: Can a car rental company keep my belongings if the person who rented the car owes money for damage they did?
My friend had rented a car while his car got some work done. He agreed to help me move from house to house and in the midst of moving, the car rental place shut the car off and came and towed it away while he was inside. Apparently they tried to claim that he didn't make his last payment but he had proof that he did. But he had done a little damage to the grill and so they wouldn't give him the car back and told him they were keeping everything inside the vehicle until he paid off the damage that he caused. Well the stuff inside the vehicle wasn't his. The stuff belonged to me. Are they legally allowed to keep my stuff from me even though I wasn't the one who drove the car or the one who rented it?
