Q: Am I at high risk for facing jail time as my consequence?
I am a 21 year old female, college student, I am a social work major and make straight A's while maintaining 7 classes as well as being Bipolar 1 and managing that. I also am in the national honor society of social workers. This is my first time being arrested, never had a criminal back ground. I got charged with 2 counts of simple assault and battery of an office, 1 count of resisting arrest, 1 count of disturbing the peace/drunkenness. I spent the night in jail and then was bonded out, my bond was 2500$.I started attending AA meetings already on Tuesday and will continue them every week. This is even before my court date so I just wanted to start correcting my wrongs and working on my issues. Do you think the judge will order I serve additional jail time at my court date? or am likely to get probation and community service since it was my first offense, I am an overall good and productive citizen who struggles from bipolar disorder and binge drinking. I am also already starting AA.
A: Everything depends on the facts and circumstances unique to one's own case, however, if you are a first time offender then there are many, many options available to you to greatly mitigate the charges----I highly recommend that you contact a criminal defense lawyer in your area --or a few of them---meet and discuss your particular situation and then decide whether or not you should hire a lawyer and /or the best way to proceed going further----hiring a lawyer right now may be the best investment to your future. Good luck.
