Q: Are emotional support animals legally tied to the owner they are registered under?
I have a friend who was with somebody (living together) for 12 years in the state of Tennessee. They had two dogs; one was his first and the other was his boyfriends first. The dog who was his boyfriends first (lets call him Tom) was registered under my friend (lets call him Mike) as an emotional support animal. However, Tom decided to leave unexpectedly, taking the dog with him, who was technically his first, but registered under Mike as his emotional support animal. Does Mike have anything legal that can back him up and help him get this dog back because it is registered to him as his emotional support animal, or does Tom have legal rights to the dog because it was his first? Note again that they are unmarried in the state of Tennessee, and as far as I know, there is no common law marriage in Tennessee.
