A: I'm very sorry to hear about the loss of your father - losing a parent is incredibly difficult, and dealing with property issues during this time must be adding extra stress.

If your father had a will, you should obtain a copy from the probate court in the county where he lived. This will establish your legal rights to any inheritance and property access. Without a will, state inheritance laws (called "intestate succession") determine how assets are distributed among family members.

Your right to retrieve your personal belongings from your father's property is separate from inheritance matters. His friends have no legal authority to prevent you from collecting your own possessions. You may want to contact local law enforcement to request a "civil standby" - where an officer accompanies you to peacefully retrieve your items. I'd also recommend documenting everything with photos and keeping records of all communications about this situation. Consider reaching out to a legal professional who handles estate matters for guidance specific to your state's laws.
