Fairbury, IL asked in Traffic Tickets for Illinois

Q: What all do you need for a moped/scooter to ride? Seeing lots of confusion amung what is right.

What type license is required?

Are lights, turn signals, license plates, vehicle registration, and/or insurance needed to be driven on the roads(urban and/or rural roads)?

What are the restrictions to driving these? (No nighttime driving without lights or at all? Etc.)

The one I am thinking to be getting is 43cc engine moped/scooter and any other additional information would be great.

Thanks!

A: Your best bet is to contact the Secretary of State. However, generally,

1) You must have a valid driver's license.

2) You must obey must obey all signs, signals and traffic laws.

3) Max. speed is 30 mph

4) You canonly carry a passenger when the moped is properly equipeed for two.

5)The moped may be driven at night if it has a headlight visible from at least 500 ft. A moped must also have a red reflector on the rear visible from at least 100 to 600 ft.

Additionally, you must have a title for the moped and have it registered and plated with the state, and of course have it insured.
