A: Backpay is determined based on the date of your application and the date that Social Security ultimately determines to be the date you became disabled (onset date). For SSI benefits, the backpay goes back to the date of onset, but no earlier than the month following the month you applied. For SSDI benefits, the backpay goes back the date of onset, but no earlier than 12 months prior to the application date. The amount of your backpay can be affected by other things, such as an offset for worker's compensation benefits or money owed to the Federal government or child support arrears.
