Q: My lease states I can have my dogs. Now the landlord is saying they can't be at the property

A: See what your lease says about changes. If your lease expired and you are on month to month, he can say they can't be at the property the following month. Under no circumstances hand him the lease--always hand people copies of documents, you retain the original.

The other option is you can, if you wish, raise the issue of you leaving and finding another place as it's a material change to the lease. However if you look at the words of the lease it may say something like "animals may be kept on the Premises except that" and then has restriction on sizes and numbers, or something like "in the discretion of the Landlord."
