A: There is always a reason. You most likely withdrew uncleared funds on a check that bounced. However, more facts are needed.

A: You need to contact the bank’s legal department through an attorney to determine the nature of the alleged violation, and to file an appeal with the bank’s internal compliance department. There are usually strict deadlines to follow and you may be prevented from filing a lawsuit if you have not appealed internally within the required time.

A: Was the account dormant? Maybe the money ended up with the state comptroller's office. Check your name here for this (and any other) accounts: https://www.osc.state.ny.us/unclaimed-funds
