Q: I would like to adopt a 27 year old who has no living biological or stepparent. What does that require?
This young man lost his mother at 14 & went to live with her former boyfriend off & on who never adopted him. My husband & I have been active in his life all these years as de facto parental figures. He has called me Mom for half his life. I would like to adopt him because family is so important to him after not having a stable familial influence most of his life. I’d like to adopt him not only for sentimental reasons, but to also provide estate planning to give him equal footing with my biological adult child whom he calls his sister. Is this sufficient grounds for the court to approve? No surname change would required as he is a grown man.
