A: The bail that is set for any criminal defendant can vary depending on a number of factors other than the person's criminal history, particularly the seriousness of the charges and the potential penalties the charge(s) carry; any aggravating factors (such as whether a weapon was used); and whether that person is a flight risk. Additionally, all things being equal, bail amounts could also vary from county to county.

Without more information as to the specific circumstances surrounding the person's case, it is almost impossible to say whether $50,000 is excessive. For example, $50,000 is not out of the ordinary for someone without any criminal record who is charged with rape; but might be excessive if the person is charged with a drug crime.
