Q: Can a collection agency try to collect on a judgement filed in 2002?

A: Yes they can. Money judgments are colelctible for 20 years in New York.

If it is an out of state judgment, it has to be " domesticated, " i.e., made to conform with New York law as a judgment. It is a legal proceeding.

If this is a New York judgment and you have little knowledge of the action or what you owe, go to the courthouse and secure a copy of the file. You may be able to get it vacated.

And remember, debtcolelctors have to follow the Fair Debt COllection Practices Act. If they act unfairly, with abuse or deception, you may sue them.
