Q: I heard that if I am convicted in a DWI case I must install an ignition interlock device in the car. How does it work?
A: In order to start a car with an ignition interlock device in the vehicle, you must blow into the device to start the car, and the device must not detect any alcohol on your breath. (It is a good idea not to use Listerine as a mouthwash during the period that you have the IID in your car as this has a high alcohol content). After the device determines that you have alcohol free breath, the car will start. You will then be required to blow into the device on regular intervals (every 10 or 15 minutes) to keep the car running. If you fail a test (either before you start the car or while you are driving), you are required within a short time to take a re-test. If you fail the test again, the car will stop running and/or the horn and lights may start flashing to alert a police officer that you have failed a test.
