Griffith, IN asked in Divorce for Indiana

Q: See detailed question below:

Left soon to be ex 3 mos. ago. Filed almost 2 mos. ago. He is living in the house we shared. Waiting for finalized divorce date in 16 days. To avoid hassles I've paid ex $600 dollars every 2 wks. for mortgage. Did I have to since I was not living there and do I have obligation to pay anymore on the mortgage & if so when will it end? Anything I have to do to get my name off the mortgage immediately or will divorce finalization be enough? Agreement being he will keep house and I could careless about getting half the value.

A: I'll answer the mortgage question first. The mortgage company DOESN'T CARE if you are divorced. Your ex needs to refinance to get you off the mortgage. Otherwise, you're stuck and you need some protective language in any final decree. Hire a lawyer. It might hurt now, but it will save you TONS of headaches in the long run.
