Alexandria, VA asked in Constitutional Law for Virginia

Q: Is it illegal for me to buy a hand gun if someone that lives in the same house as I do has a prior felony?

I've never been in trouble withe the law and I actually worked for the US Dept. of Justice and still hold my security clearance. My sister got into trouble about 13 years ago in Michigan and my stepfather also had legal trouble and also has a past felony on his record. Neither felonies are violent in nature. The handgun I wanted to purchase would have been kept in a biometric gun safe in which my fingerprints and code would be the only way to open this gun safe. So there is no way at any time, anyone other than myself could retrieve the gun or even open the safe using tools. I feel like my second amendment rights are being violated because of the poor decisions of other people that happen to live under the same roof as I do.

A: No, it is not illegal for you to purchase a handgun, and the people you are around cannot violate your 2nd amendment rights. Do you really want to take even the slightest chance that they can be charged with another serious felony?
