Lancaster, PA asked in Animal / Dog Law for Pennsylvania

Q: friend gave us dog 10mo ago. Now wants it back. Cops came and took dog. what are my rights?

Friends of ours asked us 10 months ago if we would like their dog. They were selling all their possessions and moving into an RV. It was not a good environment for the dog and at that point they asked if anyone could take her. (August 24th) we created an agreement “If it doesn't work, or if you would rather just foster for awhile please let me know! She really is an amazing dog. She's just not adjusting to rv life the way I expected.” Her exact words. To which I responded “ I have never had a dog, so I like the idea of fostering until we get a feel for her.” We took possession of the dog on The week of September 14th. yesterday 6/3 the cops showed up and threatened to arrest us if we did not give them the dog. She called the cops and wants it back. She now has dog. What can we do?

A: I'm surprised the cops did that, but I suggest you talk to them about getting it back. Unfortunately going to court can be expensive.
