Pasadena, CA asked in Public Benefits and Social Security for California

Q: Can I get disability for sciatica, spinal arthritis, and depression?

At age 12, I fell flat on my back from a high (supposedly) karate kick in the air. I've had horrible lower back problems since. My mother would take me to massage therapists who always claimed it was a slipped disc. As I got older I made several trips to the ER regarding lower back pain. In 2010 I applied for disability and the state Dr said there were notes on most of my x-rays stating that I have spinal arthritis, but the doctors never told me. These past few years it has gotten much much worse, and now I also have sciatica. I was denied on my first application, but did not appeal it in time. I reapplied this year and have already had my physical analysis. Tomorrow is my psychological assessment because I've also suffered from depression since 1982. I would like someone to represent me because I cannot work and have no income, therefore I have been homeless for many years.

A: Check with legal aid/legal services for the county you are in. Homeless services may also help. You need medical assistance so you can get the medical evaluations you need. If there is a vocational rehab department in California they might be able to help.
