Q: is jail fees part of court costs?
A: In many jurisdictions, court costs and court-ordered fees are split into different categories. For example, a defendant may owe "court costs", "probation user fees", "drug interdiction fees", etc. One type of court-imposed fee may be a per diem fee to reimburse the county for the cost of jailing someone. It is indeed ironic that a prisoner can be required to reimburse a jail for lodging him when he would have gladly stayed at home, but it is what it is.
