Denver, CO asked in Traffic Tickets for Colorado

Q: 2 separate citations for careless driving in the metro area currently, should I hire a lawyer?

2 separate citations for careless driving in the metro area, with a month and a half of each other. One of them will be in Greenwood Village and it's just a regular careless driving offense. The other one is for careless driving resulting in bodily injury and following too closely. Both of these were done during rush hour traffic and speeds were never over 15 miles an hour. I haven't been in an accident for a number of years, but I've had passed moving violations for things like speeding when I was younger. And a bad accident in 2010 where I hit a rock and it was determined not at fault because it was a rock slide. I've never been in trouble and right now I do not have very much money I'm just getting back on my feet as a survivor of domestic violence. My ex financially ruined me and I'm filing bankruptcy. So I have very little money and I'm really worried about the high ones that could be associated with this, as well as jail time, increased insurance rates and suspension of my licen

A: Hiring a lawyer is a personal decision. If you intend to fight the charges, you may want to consider hiring a lawyer (you can also go to court without a lawyer). The offenses should not result in jail time. Be aware many lawyers do not normally handle minor traffic offenses. If they do you can probably expect to pay between $500-$1,000. There are also two good NOLO book (I believe that one is titled "Fight Your Ticket" or something like that) that can be a great resources for a pro se (no lawyer) party. As for the potential license revocation, two careless driving charges should not normally cause you to lose your license. The charges may result in an increased insurance rates.
