Asked in Animal / Dog Law for Virginia

Q: My dog got off her leash and bit another dog in Virginia Beach. Am I legally responsible to pay the bills?

We called animal control bc the man was not rational and chased after my 8yr and ethe dog after my daughter got a hold of her. He verbally assaulted my daughter with cuss words and more. My wife tried to talk with him and see if we needed to take his dog to the vet. He screamed I will see you and your b daughter in court. Animal control did not issue a ticket and our blind 13 yr old husky was not deemed dangeours. My question is do I need to hire an attorney for contributory negligence, or do I have to pay bc my dog was off the leash (purely by accident). I would pay but not after the way he attacked my 8 yr old. We are filing charges for that. My vet said not to pay. Any advice would be helpful. If we are sued what would we be liable for?

A: A court may find that you are legally obligated to pay, but you do not have to pay until then. You may wish to contact your homeowners or renters insurance, as they may provide coverage.
