Q: Can I legally force my mother to get rid of her horses?
Florida: My mother has 4 horses, and financially she is suffereing. She works 2 jobs and still cannot pay her bills, utilities are cut off every other month and I'm having to pay them for her. I know if she got rid of her horses, or at least 3 of them, she would be fine, but she refuses to do so. She calls them "Pasture Ornaments" because she works so much she never has time to ride them or enjoy them, there is no real point to having them. Can I take her to court and have a judge order her to get rid of them? If so, what kind of lawyer do I need to look for? Thank You.
A: No, unless you can persuade a court that she is mentally incompetent, you cannot second-guess her financial decisions. You indicate that you are "having" to pay her bills. Actually that is not correct. Legally, you have no obligation to pay her bills.
