Asked in Family Law and Child Support for Maryland

Q: am I responsible for paying husband's Maryland child support?

Got married to my husband. I'm a civilian who works overseas on a military installation. He moved so we can be together, after 5 months of applying for full time work with no luck- he accepted a position that is considered flex staff. It's his only option right now, as many positions he's offered are only flex (20-40) at a basic minimum wage. He is now in arrears due to being behind and not having the high income he once had in Maryland. Will I be responsible for his child support fees?

A: You are not responsible for paying the child support. However, any joint accounts you have could be garnished to recover any arrears. If your husband is earning less, he should file with the court for a modification of support. Otherwise, the arrears will keep mounting which can have severe consequences such as tax refund checks being intercepted, his passport not renewed and other issues.
