North Miami Beach, FL asked in Landlord - Tenant for Florida

Q: What do i when i find out the person i have been paying rent to is a squatter and not the landlord? I have documentation

I am located in Miami Dade County. I have lived in a property several months, paid a deposit and paid weekly and i have all my deposit and rent receipts along with email where hes representing himself as the owner. I recently found out he was a squatter and living here illegally. The owner met me and my family has no issue with us and made us a new lease at a discounted rental amount and wants us to stay. She has began the process of evicting him. What legal recourse do i have? I believe this would be a criminal matter and a possible civil one?

A: I don't think you have suffered any damages, other than perhaps the deposits. you would have been paying rent to someone anyway.
