Q: I had a $3000 dollar laptop that was distroyed by a hotel. Do the have to reimburse me for my cost of the laptop?
I had a $3000 dollar laptop that was only 8 moths old. I was staying in a best western hotel and they had a leake that distorted my laptop. I sent it in for repair under there request and they said it was no repairable. The hotel said there insurance company said the laptop was only worth $1230 after depreciation which makes no sense the laptop was in brand new condition at the time. Is the hotel liable to reimburse me for the remainder of my laptop cost?
A:
Check to see what value of a used laptop is. That is your value. Even though it was in "like new" condition, the law says insurance companies only have to reimburse for the market value of a computer of that make, model, configuration that is 8 months used. Check to see that they included everything you had on it--also recovery if you need someone to recover your data. The price they are quoting is a little steep of a discount. Either you overpaid or they aren't counting anything.
Ask for their "valuation sheet" if you didn't get a sheet with a list containing everything you had on it.
Then check with the insurance commissioners consumer unit to see if there is anything they have dealing with valuation of computers.

As it's a property damage from residential policy, you may get something closer to value.
Good luck!
