Q: Can the Colorado DMV revoke your license for a seatbelt fine from 18 years ago that you are just now finding out about?
The fine is out of Morgan County fore $180 in 2000. I came home to a letter from the Colorado DMV saying if it wasn't paid by May they would revoke my license. Why wouldn't they have done something sooner if this was an unpaid fine? I honestly dont remember the ticket its been 17 years. I called right away and paid it this afternoon when I got the letter. Im just curious as to why now and why wouldnt they have had to send me something showing me the ticket since it was so long ago so I knew it was legitimate? How is it legal to bring up whatever they want so many years later.
A: It is not the original fine that is the issue, it is the non-payment that is the problem. Your license can be revoked for non-payment of fines. It is possible that you did not receive notice prior to the letter, but you clearly have notice now. If you did not receive proper notice you can request that some of the interest be excused. Be aware, you will still have to pay the full amount listed at present by the date listed in the letter or your license will be revoked (even if you get some or all of the interest excused).
