Q: how much do criminal lawyers charge. My granddaughter has two cases against her and she is facing jail time.

she clims if she goes to jail, she will kill herself. she has two small children. she went to one lawyer and he charges $2500. She has no money and no job. I am willing to help her but do not have $2500. I am her grandmother and on social security

A: If she truly has no money and cannot afford a lawyer the judge at the court can appoint a lawyer for her called the public defender but in general you have to earn no more than 150% of the poverty level and you still have to pay a small fee. $2500.00 for any criminal charge is really cheap for a private lawyer. Many good lawyers won't even touch any criminal charge for less than 5K. Lawyers like any other professional have expenses from keeping the office rent paid to paying staff and even the internet bill.

Assuming that she is truly indigent, I would urge her to immediately apply for the services of the Public Defender's Office, which has many dedicated, competent attorneys and investigators, that may provide what your grand daughter needs.
