A: If you have earned enough income to have a filing requirement, or if you have income from US or foreign sources that produces specialized tax requirements, regardless of whether the income is from employment, then you need to file a tax return. Any US citizen, permanent resident (Green Card holder), or resident (regardless of immigration status) of the United States is required to file and pay taxes on income produced worldwide (including investment earnings, pension plans/retirement plans, etc.).

I would suggest reviewing IRS Publication 501, Pages 3-5, for filing requirements: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p501.pdf

And IRS Publication 54 if you are a US Citizen or Green Card Holder who was living abroad: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p54.pdf

Or IRS Publication 519 if you are not a US Citizen or Green Card Holder: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p519.pdf
