Phoenix, AZ asked in Copyright for Arizona

Q: I made a spelling mistake in the title and cover of the 2 deposit copies. Do I need to register again to fix the errors?

I made a spelling mistake in the title and cover of the 2 deposit copies I made. I want to correct those mistakes once these books are copyrighted. Am I going to have to register the corrected copies to have my copyright hold up in a US court? Do I need to register the corrected copies again for them to hold up in a foreign court?

I found out the answer myself from the US Copyright Office. They said as long as the contents are the same it is still copyrighted and you don't have to register again. The same applies if you want to make a paperback version of the work. And copyright doesn't protect font size. Thank you for trying to answer my question though. It's much appreciated.

A: You would need to consult with your own attorney to determine the best course of action. Your attorney will need to know more details about your application and any errors contained therein before advising you. But, for your information generally:

The U.S. Copyright Office has a procedure for corrections and amplifications for copyright registrations; applications for supplementary registration. See https://www.copyright.gov/title37/201/37cfr201-5.html. However, the fees for a correction or amplification of a claim are more expensive than the initial claim registration fees. See https://www.copyright.gov/title37/201/37cfr201-3.html. (It appears that Form CA would be appropriate).

More information can be found in Section 1802.8(B) of the Compendium of U.S. Copyright Office Practices: https://www.copyright.gov/comp3/docs/compendium.pdf.
