Port Saint Lucie, FL asked in Car Accidents for Florida

Q: I was involved in a car accident back in November of 2016.

I was homeless at the time of the car accident and was not made aware through any means that my debit card on file with my insurance company had bounced. In February I received a collection notice for the cost of damages before I had ever received a bill. Today, I received a subrogation notice on the collection. I do not have a job, I do not have any items in my name. What is to happen if I do not pay this collection?

A: Very likely, the collection notice will result in a lawsuit and then the lawsuit will likely result in a judgment if you do nothing. If you have no assets then the insurance company will just get a piece of paper (a judgment that states that you owe them money). The Judgment will basically follow you for years to come. It is best to meet the case head on and show them how little that you do have and maybe they will not take it to the next level. If possible hire a lawyer, but I understand that you may not have the funds to do so.
