Roanoke, VA asked in Divorce, Child Custody and Child Support for Virginia

Q: I need advice bc my husband is talking to a lawyer secretly today. He withdrew all our money from our bank account,

Tells me he is going to take my cell phone and car, and he has installed cameras in our house bc he says now that I "neglect" our child. He gives me an allowance of $100. We had 300,000 in our savings. He is abusive (verbally, mentally, physically) and I have him on video admitting it, so he is trying everything to screw me as much as possible. I'm scared and don't know what to do. He is a Dr. and has his own practice and I'm not sure if he is trying to take my name off of our house, land, retirement, business, etc. I'm terrified and feel trapped. He won't even let me leave the house today bc he took the carseat. I'm a stay at home mom of a 2 year old and we have been married 6 years. He always wins.

A: In short, you need to contact a family law lawyer immediately. There are many, many ways to discourage and/or to stop this type of abusive and disrespectful behavior, but we need to get started quickly because often the courts are backed up. With you having access to almost no money, a few weeks can be an eternity. Often though, before even getting to a judge, a well-drafted letter from an attorney sometimes puts a stop to or slows down this money problem. The marital estate is presumably one-half yours, no matter who made the money, and he likely has no right to remove it all from your access. The rest of this story is too long to type in this forum. Contact a lawyer as soon as you can, and get this unraveled so you can continue to live while we all figure out the divorce if you all are going there! Our best to you.
