Asked in Animal / Dog Law for Colorado

Q: My dog bit another dog, Can that dog owner have me fined and given a ticket from the animal police?

Both dogs were OFF leash, the dogs had a spat. My dog won because she was bigger. The following day she came to my door asking for $600 in cash, we gave her our pet policy insurance to pay for ALL of the vet bills and expenses. She NEVER called them and never followed up with us. Well, she sent the Animal Police to the apartment looking for me to give me a ticket and a fine more than likely. Am I going to have to go to court over this due to these unfair charges when both dogs were OFF leash and both dog owners should be accountable of responsibility.

Why isn't the other lady getting charges for any of this? It's not fair that I'm the only one paying the piper when 1. She could have had all of it paid off with my insurance and 2. She was also at fault

Mind you, this event also happened over a month and she only sent the police yesterday the day after seeing me walking my dog on leash at the same time as her and her dog is always off leash and barking at everyone. I do not understand

A: Yes, if she files a complaint and the police follow through with it, you could end up with charges. It is best to speak to an attorney about defending this case both criminally and civilly.
