Asked in Adoption for Kentucky

Q: My soon to 15 year old daughter (nov) wants her step father to adopt her what do we need to do?

We live in Cadiz ky, the closest legal aid office is hopkinsville ky, She has nothing to do with her sperm donor, he pays child support an I want to drop that, she wants to be adopted by the man that is has been there an is there for her, my ex (her sperm donor) is in to drugs an is waiting to be indicated for sexual abuse on a 9 yr old little girl. She makes her own decisions when it comes to her sperm donor, I back her on her decision she has made about this, anyone can call or meet with her to talk to her about her decision she has made, I know her sperm donor with not willingly sign any papers, he hardly pays his child support, he is 2453.88 $ behind an for the month of August he still owes 215.00 $, all i want is the back child support when I drop the child support once she is adopted by my husband.. I need legal advice on how to go about this an if I need a lawyer would y'all be willing to help me out.

A: You definitely need a lawyer to guide you through this. Consult a local attorney to help you. Your husband can file a petition for adoption of your daughter. If your ex doesn’t contest it or he defaults, you likely win. If your ex challenges it, the court will make the decision that is in the child’s best interest.
