A: You likely would have been better off to have Called the police as typically you end up getting a call for every minor and major breakdown for the next set of years.

If you have called the police and git your and the other drivers insurance involved the repairs needs would have been independently verified and made by a proper body shop. Also the insurance company has more experience and they can spot prior damage and unrelated damage.

Ultimately you owe what it cost to make the other persons car look like it did immediately prior to your hiring the car. Thus that would be more than just parts in abnormal situation.
