Cleveland, OH asked in Divorce, Immigration Law and Domestic Violence for Ohio

Q: Brother married in Thailand in 2016 - wife is from there - looking into disillusionment or divorce due to issues.

She came here this year around April, and since then things have gotten bad for them. Apparently, she has undisclosed mental health and medical issues that have put a major strain on their marriage. She has increasingly become violent towards my brother, despite him trying to help her. She has hit him on several occasions and constantly argues with him - it appears that she is only happy with him when he buys her things or gives her money. He kept excusing her behavior as misunderstandings due to the language barrier, but now it's out of control and he doesn't know what to do.

To complicate things, as of yesterday, she was admitted to a psychiatric hospital as she had tried to overdose on Tylenol, and was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. She told him she wants nothing to do with him now, and he feels betrayed and hurt. I told him he needs to consult a lawyer, but he is devastated right now, so I want to find out his options.

Thank you

A: He can either get a lawyer and terminate his marriage, as you have advised, or seek counseling on how to remain with a difficult spouse. He can use the Find a Lawyer tab to consult a local divorce attorney about his options.
